What Is Remote Desktop?
A remote desktop is a means to control another computer remotely. Several variations on the idea are available, using either proprietary software or one of two mainstream technologies:
- Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP): Created by Microsoft, this requires client and server software on the home and remote devices. Clients are available for most operating systems, and the server software is built into Windows 10. RDP server software for Linux is also available.
- Virtual Network Computing (VNC): Relying on the Remote Frame buffer (RFB) protocol, VNC works with Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop environments that use the X Window System.
Other popular technologies that you might have used include ICA (Independent Computing Architecture, developed by Citrix), HP Remote Graphics Software, or even SSH with X11 forwarding if you require remote access to a Linux desktop.

If you’ve been on the receiving end of a remote desktop connection, however, the engineer might have used TeamViewer or LogMeIn or any number of other services. These typically use proprietary technology (one developed purely by or for that service) or one of those mentioned above.
But it isn’t just PC-to-PC connections you can set up. It’s even possible to remotely control your PC with the Android device in your pocket.
How to Access a PC Remotely From your Android or iPhone
If you are stuck working from home, you can still remotely access computers at the office. This process can be done from computer to computer, or you can use Microsoft’s Remote Desktop tool to access a remote PC from an iOS or Android device. With it, you can view the screen, open files, and work with applications as easily (though maybe not as quickly) as if you were right in front of that computer. Here is the process of how to use the mobile app to access a remote computer.
Allow Remote Access
Access PCs Remotely- First, set up the System properly to access a computer remotely. Next, on the Computer, move to Settings > System > Remote Desktop you wish to access and make sure the Enable Remote Desktop switch is turned on.
By default, the options for Keep your PC awake for connections when it is plugged in and Make my PC discoverable on private networks to enable automatic connection from a remote device may both be enabled. To modify or view either option, click the corresponding link to Show settings, but you can leave both turned on at this point. While you’re here, note the name of the PC, as you’ll need it when you set up the connection.
Remote Access Settings
Access PCs Remotely- For remote access settings, click on the Advanced settings link and make sure the Configure Network Level Authentication box is turned on. And this feature provides an extra layer of protection to ward off uninvited guests and malicious users.
If you connect to the computer on the same network via a VPN or other means, ignore the section for External connections. The section for the Remote Desktop port shows the default port to listen for and accept a remote connection.
