Monthly Security Updates are a huge bummer for the average consumer who is not using a Stock Android powered smartphone. Android Security Patches should be pushed within the first week of the Month but, OEMs sometime take a lot of time to deliver these updates & some OEMs don’t even bother to give these updates after a certain amount of time. However, that issue might get resolved pretty soon as Google is including the Security Patches section is the OEM agreements.
According to a report by XDA Developers, in Google I/O 2018, Mr. Kleidermacher, Google’s head of Android platform security, discussed how they were working with OEMs to deliver monthly security patches with the help of Project Treble and if you remember, that’s the reason why this time a total of 12 phones have qualified to get the Android P Beta. He added,
“We’ve also worked on building security patching into our OEM agreements. Now this will really … lead to a massive increase in the number of devices and users receiving regular security patches.”
So, as Google has already worked to include Monthly Security Patches into OEM agreements, all the current smartphones which are under the manufacturars official support period, should get regular security updates every month. However, we need to see actually when & how widely this initiative will make it’s mark. And, please do the same for Android Upgrades (by generation) for at least two years. That would really be amazing.
